What to Actually Pay a DJ in 2026

Opening slot, peak time, private event, wedding — a plain-language breakdown of the rates working DJs are quoting right now.

DJ pricing feels opaque because there is no list price. What you are quoting for is a bundle: the set, the gear, the travel, the time spent preparing, and the risk of holding a date.

Rough ranges

  • Opening slot, small club: often a door split or a flat fee that barely covers the cab home. This is where people build.
  • Peak time, established room: a real fee, usually negotiated per night and rising with draw.
  • Private party: meaningfully higher than a club slot — you are buying exclusivity on a Saturday.
  • Wedding: the top of most DJs' range, because it includes planning calls, MC duties, and zero margin for error.

What moves the number

Travel and load-in time. Whether they bring the system. How long the set is. How many genres you are asking them to cover. And, honestly, how late you booked — a DJ holding a date for you three months out has turned down other work.

Budget the extras

Sound rental, a backup deck, transport for crates, and a meal if the night runs long. These are small line items that sour a good booking when they turn up as a surprise.
